DIY Seed Tape

Carrot seeds are tiny and sometimes can get lost when planting them. Using seed tape is one way to get smaller seeds placed at the correct spacing of where you want them and also helps you skip on having to thin sprouts later if planted too close together. This method works best for seeds that can be directly sown and that are smaller in size like carrot, lettuce, basil, kale, parsley and zinnia’s. Making your own seed tape is pretty easy and only requires a few materials. This a great project to do with kids!

Supplies you’ll need:

  • Seeds

  • Paper towel

  • Flour and water for glue/paste

  • Small bowl and spoon for mixing

  • Ruler or measuring tape

Step 1: Make the Glue/Paste

Mix 1 part flour: 1 part water in a small bowl. You do not need a lot, a little goes a long way. The first time I did this I mixed probably one cup of each which was way too much. I’d start with a tablespoon of each. Stir together until you make a thick but spreadable paste. You can also use Elmer’s glue (non-toxic) or maple syrup.

Step 2: Prepare the Tape

Cut the strips of paper about 1-2 inches wide. There is no need to overthink it. I folded the paper towel down like an accordion and then cut into strips. Use your ruler or measuring tape to mark.

Step 3: Apply the Seeds

Use a spoon, toothpick or finger to add small dab of the paste wherever your desired spacing is. Drop 1-2 seeds into each paste dot.

Step 4: Let the seed tape dry for a few a hours.

Step 5: Plant your Seed Tape

Lay the seed tape on the soil. Dig a trench with your finger at the seed depth requirement and place the seed tape in the trench and then lightly cover with soil and water.
